Counting in groups

Materials:
-A
collection of 25-100 items for students to count (shoes, buttons, crayons,
etc.)
Directions:
·
Pose the questions “how could we count these in
a way that’s easier than counting by ones?”
·
Use whatever suggestions you get as best you can
·
After trying a few different ways, talk about
what worked best and what didn’t work as well
·
If no one brought up counting by tens, suggest
it
Pretzel stick place value
Materials:
·
Laminated place value mats for each student
·
Numbers for teacher to hold up
·
Pretzel sticks for each student
Directions:
·
Give each student a place value mat and a pile
of pretzel sticks
·
Draw a number card and read it aloud (also hold
it up for the students to see)
·
Using pretzel sticks on place value mats
students will create a representation of the number
Place Value Puzzler
Materials:
·
Computer with access to the internet
Directions:
·
Students can then select a difficulty level
under “choose the place value” – this could vary based on what grade level and
what skill level the students are at
·
Then the students can play the game and practice
identifying which digit is representing a place value
